The Peanuts Movie is coming to theaters on November 6th, so Safeway stores are getting everyone ready with an in-store promotion and sweepstakes to win a fun trip to California to visit Snoopy’s house or an XBox console. As a kid, I remember watching Charlie Brown and Snoopy all the time, so naturally, I was really excited for this post.
As I started thinking more and more about my childhood, it made me remember my family tradition of cartoons and doughnuts for breakfast and an early matinee movie in the afternoon. My parents divorced when I was 5-years-old, so this became our lazy Sundays with Dad. It was the best. I know, what kid wouldn’t love sweets and movies? But, for me, it was our thing. I knew I could always count on our lazy Sundays together. My dad would load my sister, brother and me in the car, drive us to get doughnuts and we’d all go home and watch cartoons while my dad would read us the Charlie Brown comic strip.
While I can’t say that I’ll carry on this tradition in the exact same way with Octavian when he is older (although maybe his dad will!), we will definitely have our special doughnut and movie dates. Inspired by The Peanuts Movie coming out, I decided to bake up some peanut butter doughnuts with a chocolate glaze. In honor of the Peanut Gang and Halloween, I topped them with chopped peanuts and orange sprinkles. Just as delicious as the fried doughnuts I grew up eating, I will most definitely be making these again!
Purchasing everything I needed at my local Safeway store, they were a piece of cake to whip together. Next time, Octavian will have to partake in the decorating, even if that means find sprinkles all over the house for the next ten years. Since he’s never seen a doughnut until now, he refused to even try a bite! Clearly I have some work to do in order to get our doughnut and movie dates to be a success. My husband and I weren’t complaining, though. More for us! Octavian loved watching the classic, A Boy Named Charlie Brown, as his mom and dad stuffed their faces.

Baked Peanut Butter Doughnuts with Chocolate Glaze and Chopped Peanut/Sprinkle Topping
Prep Time: 20 minutes / Cook Time: 8-12 minutes / Total Time: 28-32 minutes (approx.)
Yield: 6 Doughnuts
1 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
3 Tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1/4 cup smooth peanut butter
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 cup powdered sugar
3 Tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 Tablespoons milk or cream (I used 2% and it was wonderful)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Chopped nuts- peanuts, walnuts, pecans, etc.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and spray doughnut pan with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside while you prepare the batter.
- In a medium bowl sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
- In a separate, large bowl, cream together the butter, brown sugar and peanut butter. Whip until light, fluffy and creamy. In my standing mixer this took about 3 minutes. I would occasionally turn it off and clean the sides of the bowl. Add the egg and continue mixing. Then stir in the vanilla extract.
- Next, add in the dry ingredients and the buttermilk, alternating between the two. If you are using a standing mixer, you’ll want to do this part by hand using a whisk. You’ll want to add the flour in three batches, with each addition interrupted by the addition of buttermilk. After each addition, mix until just combined. Don’t over-mix.
- Grab your pre-greased doughnut pan and start filling. Using a small spoon slowly fill each doughnut hole just shy of the top of the pan. The doughnuts do rise, but nothing crazy. Bake for 8-12 minutes (ovens really do vary so keep a close watch!) or until toothpick comes out clean. Allow them to cool and then transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely before adding the glaze.
- While you wait oh so patiently for the doughnuts to cool, prepare the glaze. In a medium bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, cocoa powder and salt. Add the vanilla extract and, one tablespoon at a time, start adding the milk. Continue adding each additional tablespoon until the glaze is thick and not too runny.
- Dip the doughnuts into the chocolate glaze or spoon it over the top. Sprinkle with chopped nuts or sprinkles (or both) and serve! I found mine best enjoyed with a big glass of milk.
