Mulled wine. Who’s had it?
The first time I tried mulled wine was when I lived in Germany and traveled to Prague for a long weekend. I kept seeing signs for “mulled wine” everywhere, but I had no idea what it was. Naturally, I assumed there would be some kind of wine in there, but beyond that was a mystery. Always the wine lover, I made sure to order a cup (or more) before returning to Germany.
After that, however, I pretty much forgot about mulled wine. After my adventures in Europe, I returned home, got pregnant, had a baby. I hardly had the energy to re-cork the wine bottle, let alone do anything other than drink it.
That is, until the past couple years.
Finally out of the baby years, I find that I have a little more time to go wild and do things like make mulled wine or get a manicure (I know, first world problems). And I have been so thankful for the time! Especially come holiday season!
For starters, I’m a nail biter. Add that to anxiety and the holidays? Well, let’s just say thank goodness for manicures. And mulled wine? You guyss, it’s the holidays!! Mulled wine is a quintessential holiday drink and it is so so good! Plus, it’s super easy! Basically, gather ingredients, toss in a pot and simmer until ready to serve. The only thing you need to watch for? Boiling.
Do not boil.
Unless you want a non-alcoholic drink, in which case, boil away!
But, that would be silly.
Spiced Mulled Wine with Cranberries and Blackberries
prep time: 5 minutes | cook time: 15 minutes
total time: 20 minutes
yield: 5-6 cups
1 bottle dry red wine
1/2 cup brandy
1 orange, sliced
1/2 cup fresh cranberries, halved
1/2 cup blackberries
7 whole cloves
3 star anise
3 whole cinnamon sticks
1/4 cup honey or brown sugar
Additional blackberries, cranberries, and sliced orange, for serving
- Add all the ingredients into a (non-aluminum) saucepan set over medium-high heat. When the wine just starts to boil, reduce heat to low (do not continue to boil or all the alcohol will boil off) and cover with a tight-fitting lid. Simmer for at least 15 minutes or up to 3 hours.
- When ready to serve, strain wine through a fine mesh strainer and pour into the desired number of glasses.
- Garnish with additional orange slices, blackberries, and cranberries, if desired.
**while I made my mulled wine in a cast iron skillet, I highly recommend preparing yours in a saucepan or a pan with higher sides. Cleaning red wine from carpet is no fun (even if the photos turn out really pretty).
