Southern-style biscuits and gravy are a breakfast favorite, made with just five main ingredients. It takes just 20 minutes to make and pairs perfectly with eggs and breakfast potatoes. Season with cinnamon or cayenne for extra depth, but be careful with added salt. Some brands or types of breakfast sausage can be quite salty, so hold off on adding any additional salt until the very end of cooking.
Sift flour into a bowl, add baking powder and salt, whisk to combine, cut in chunks of cold butter, add milk, and turn out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll out the dough until 1/2 inch thick and use a cookie or biscuit cutter to cut biscuits approximately 2 inches in diameter. Place on a baking sheet or skillet and bake at 450F for 12-15 minutes. Yields 12 biscuits.
Sausage Gravy is made by browning sausage in a skillet, melting butter, adding 3 tablespoons of all-purpose flour, and whisking in 1 cup of milk to create a roux.
Add sausage, black pepper, cinnamon, and milk to gravy and pour over buttery biscuits. Garnish with parsley or thyme if desired.
