Masoor Dal is a fragrant and flavorful Indian spiced lentil curry made with red lentils, dried red chilis, onion, garlic, and cumin seeds. Naturally vegan and gluten-free.

Masoor Dal (Red Lentil Dal)

– Masoor dal – Olive oil or Ghee – Whole dried red chilies – Onion – Garlic

Ingredients

– Salt – Ground turmeric – Fresh tomatoes – Water – Cumin seeds

Rinse thoroughly with cold water to remove any dust and dirt. Drain thoroughly and set aside.

Rinse the Dal

Heat oil or ghee in a large pot. Add the dried red chilies and chopped onion and saute. Stir in the minced garlic, salt, ground turmeric, and red lentils.

Add the diced tomatoes and about 6 cups of water or vegetable broth.

Simmer

Bring to a low boil, reduce to a simmer and cover. Simmer for 30-45 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Make the Tadka

Add the oil, dried red chilies, and cumin seeds. Cook until fragrant and browned – stir as needed to prevent burning, then in the last minute, stir in the garlic.

Carefully pour the tempering oil and spices (tadka) into the pot with the cooked lentils and mix well to combine. Allow everything to simmer for 1-2 minutes.
