Fresh, seasonal fruit is one of my family’s favorite sweet snacks. But sometimes, pairing fruit with a creamy fruit dip makes it extra special, and even more irresistible. This cream cheese fruit dip is my go-to recipe for parties, potlucks, or whenever I feel inspired to jazz up a simple fruit tray or platter. It’s also one of my favorite desserts. I love that it’s easy to make with simple ingredients and can even be made a few days in advance! The best part? It’s completely customizable (be sure to check out some of my ideas below).

Ingredients and Substitutions

Below are the ingredients (and possible substitutions) needed to make this fruit dip recipe. For the full recipe with ingredient amounts, please see the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • Cream Cheese: The base of the dip, providing a rich, creamy texture and undeniably delicious taste. For a dairy-free version, substitute with plant-based cream cheese. Fat-free cream cheese is not recommended.
  • Powdered Sugar: Adds sweetness and a lovely smooth texture. You can substitute with honey or maple syrup, but the consistency will be a little thinner and the flavor slightly different.
  • Sour Cream: Gives the dip a tangy flavor and a lighter texture. Greek yogurt (plain or vanilla) makes a great substitute, adding an extra boost of creaminess.
  • Vanilla Extract: Adds warmth. For best flavor, use real vanilla extract verses imitation vanilla. Almond extract or a touch of lemon zest can be used for a different flavor profile.
  • Milk: Thins the fruit dip to your desired consistency. Use your favorite type of milk (whole, skim, almond, oat, etc.), or for extra richness, use half-and-half or cream.
  • Salt: Just a pinch helps balance the sweetness and brings out the flavors.

Tip Before Getting Started

Always bring the cream cheese and sour cream to room temperature before blending. Room temperature dairy results in a smoother, creamier, lump-free dip.

Fruit Dip Customizations

There are countless fun and delicious ways to jazz up this easy cream cheese fruit dip. Here’s a handful of examples:

  1. Make it chocolatey: There are a couple different ways to do this. My favorite way is to add a handful of mini chocolate chips (dark, milk, or semi-sweet). You can also blend in a tablespoon of cocoa powder. Or both!
  2. Make it extra fruity: Just because it’s a dip for fruit, that doesn’t meat it can’t have fruit in it! Try mixing in some finely chopped strawberries, raspberries, or drained, crushed pineapple. Depending on the fruit, you could also add some shredded coconut (pineapple) or mini dark chocolate chips (raspberries). I mean, heck, you could even swap some or all of the plain cream cheese for strawberry cream cheese.
  3. Spice it up: Add a pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg, or pumpkin pie spice for warmth and depth. This is especially yummy with apples, pears, and bananas!
  4. Add crunch and texture: Top with granola, chopped nuts, or crushed graham crackers just before serving. Fruit dip for breakfast, anyone?

How to Serve Fruit Dip

This delicious fruit dip is a fun snack, appetizer, or even dessert! Kiddos love it and it pairs well with nearly all types of fruit. Some of our favorites include:

  • Strawberries
  • Sliced apples (tossed in lemon juice)
  • Sliced bananas
  • Chopped pineapple
  • Sliced mango
  • Grapes
  • Kiwi
  • Watermelon slices
  • Melon

It’s also great with non-fruit snacks like graham crackers, vanilla wafers, animal crackers, pretzels, and waffle cookies.

Got leftovers? Use the leftover dip as a sweet spread for bagels, waffles, or pancakes, or swirl it into overnight oats or oatmeal for a creamy treat.

Serving Tip

If you plan to serve this fruit dip for small children or at a party, consider portioning into small cups or jars for easy, mess-free, and germ-free serving. You could also make simple fruit-skewers with a variety of different fruits threaded onto toothpicks or longer wooden skewers. Adorable presentation, and so easy to do.

Notes

Yield: This Cream Cheese Fruit Dip recipe yields approximately 1.5 to 2 cups of dip which is enough for 8 to 10 servings as part of a fruit platter or party tray. If you’re serving a large group or hope to have leftovers, consider doubling the recipe.
Tip: Remember to let the cream cheese and sour cream come to room temperature before mixing. If you use cold cream cheese, it is more likely that your fruit dip will turn out lumpy.
How long will this cream cheese fruit dip last in the fridge? Stored in an airtight container, this fruit dip will last up to one week. This affords plenty of time to make this dip a couple of days ahead of time, if needed. If the dip is too thick straight from the refrigerator, let it sit at room temperature for 10–15 minutes and give it a good stir before serving.
I do not recommend freezing.
