Delicious Ham Salad Recipe made with diced ham, hard-boiled eggs, sweet onion, and diced celery in a flavorful combination of mayonnaise, yellow mustard, dill pickle relish, and fresh dill. The perfect combination of crunchy and creamy and ready in just 15 minutes!
Creamy, mayo-based salads are my absolute favorite – and this creamy, crunchy ham salad is the best. Less traditional than old-fashioned ham salads made with minced ham salad spread, today’s recipe is made with diced pieces of ham, similar to my chicken salad recipe. It’s chunky, crunchy, and meant to be eaten with a spoon, on salads, or on sandwiches. It’s one of my favorite recipes to make whenever I have leftover ham from Easter or Christmas.
Ham Salad Ingredients
- Ham: This recipe is great with leftover holiday ham. I’m using uncured ham steaks for this recipe, which are both convenient and flavorful. Ultimately, use whatever ham you enjoy eating.
- Mayonnaise and Mustard: The combination of mayo and mustard creates the sauce for this salad. This recipe calls for yellow mustard, but Dijon mustard or whole-grain mustard are delicious alternatives.
- Veggies: Diced celery and onions add a nice crunch and yummy contrast to the salty ham and creamy mayo sauce.
- Dill Pickle Relish: Relish (or just a couple of chopped pickles) add sweetness, tang, and crunch. Plus, the acidity from the pickles helps balance the saltiness of the ham and the richness of the mayonnaise.
- Fresh Herbs (optional): I’ve added a little bit of fresh dill, but feel free to add herbs like parsley or chives.
- Hard-Boiled Eggs (optional): Hard-boiled eggs aren’t usually found in traditional ham salad recipes, but they’re, hands down, one of my favorite additions to this recipe. The creamy, mild flavor of the eggs complements the bold flavors of the ham.
- Optional additions: Bell pepper, green onion.

How to Make Ham Salad
Begin by whisking together the mayo, mustard, relish, and fresh dill in a large mixing bowl. Once combined, stir in the ham, eggs, onion, and celery. Season with salt and black pepper, if desired.
Can I Make Ham Salad Without Mayonnaise?
Yes. Although mayo is the traditional creamy component in ham salad, you can use alternatives like Greek yogurt, avocado, or Miracle Whip.
How to Serve Ham Salad
My favorite use for ham salad is to make a ham salad sandwich! Other yummy ways to enjoy this recipe are as an appetizer with crackers or pita chips, fresh veggies, or on a bed of fresh lettuce as part of a salad plate.
How to Store Leftover Ham Salad
Transfer the leftover ham salad to an airtight container and place it in the refrigerator. For best results, enjoy leftovers within 3-4 days. Freezing is not recommended.
