Air Fryer Buffalo Wings That Taste Like Fried Hot Wings

Close up photo of Chef Jessica Randhawa of The Forked Spoon in a blue spotted dress, in the sunlight

These air fryer buffalo wings deliver the same tangy, spicy flavor and deliciousness as the deep-fried kind—minus the effort and mess. Thanks to the air fryer’s compact size and powerful convection fan, we get wings with juicy, tender meat inside and perfectly crisp, golden skin outside. Plus, they’re a tad bit better for you than regular, deep-fried chicken wings and cook a whole lot faster than oven-baked versions. I actually like the air fryer version of buffalo wings best, which is great because it’s also the easiest to make. This recipe is perfect if you’re:

  • Craving classic buffalo wings without deep frying
  • Looking for a fast game day appetizer that cooks in under 30 minutes
  • Short on time but still want crispy, wing shop flavor and texture
  • New to making wings at home and want a simple, reliable method

These air fryer buffalo wings are smothered in homemade buffalo sauce just before serving and taste especially delicious with creamy ranch or blue cheese dressing for dipping. Ingredients and Substitutions

For the wings

  • Chicken wings (wingettes and drumettes): If you’re starting with whole wings, separate them at the joints and save the tips for homemade chicken stock.
  • Nonstick cooking spray: To spray the basket of the air fryer and prevent sticking.
  • Garlic powder: Adds savory flavor without burning at high heat.
  • Salt and black pepper: Simple seasoning that keeps the focus on the buffalo sauce. Substitution: your favorite wing seasoning blend, but go easy since the sauce is already salty.

For the buffalo sauce

Feel free to swap homemade sauce for your favorite store-bought buffalo wing sauce.

  • Frank’s RedHot Original (or your favorite cayenne hot sauce): For classic buffalo wing flavor, use Frank’s RedHot Sauce. Substitutions: another cayenne-style hot sauce works, but it may be hotter or more vinegary depending on the brand.
  • Unsalted butter: Gives buffalo sauce its signature richness and helps it cling to the wings. Substitutions: use salted butter and reduce added salt elsewhere.
  • White vinegar: Brightens the sauce and adds that tangy finish. Substitutions: apple cider vinegar or distilled vinegar.
  • Worcestershire sauce (optional): Adds a savory, slightly tangy flavor that rounds out the sauce. Substitutions: a splash of soy sauce or coconut aminos.
  • Garlic powder (optional): Reinforces the savory flavor in the sauce.

How to Cook Air Fryer Buffalo Wings

  1. Preheat the air fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 370°F and lightly spray the basket with nonstick spray.
  2. Dry and season the wings: Pat the wings very dry with paper towels, then toss them with garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Air fry in a single layer: Arrange the wings in the basket in a single layer so they do not touch (cook in batches if needed). Cook for 10 minutes, then flip. Cook for 8 minutes, then flip again.
  4. Crisp at high heat: Increase the temperature to 400°F and cook for 3 to 4 minutes, skin-side up for extra crisp skin. The internal temperature should reach at least 170°F for most juicy results.
  5. Make the buffalo sauce: Warm the buffalo sauce gently on the stovetop or in the microwave until smooth and pourable.
  6. Toss and serve: Transfer hot wings to a large bowl, pour warm buffalo sauce over the top, and toss to coat. Serve immediately.

Buffalo Sauce Variations

Buffalo wings are all about the sauce, and it is easy to adjust the flavor to match your heat tolerance.

  • Classic: Frank’s hot sauce + melted butter
  • Extra tangy: Add a small splash of vinegar
  • Extra spicy: Add cayenne or a few dashes of a hotter sauce
  • Milder: Use a little more butter or stir in a spoonful of honey after cooking

Tip: Always toss wings with warm sauce so it coats them evenly. If you want a full deep dive on ratios, heat levels, and storage, see my Homemade Buffalo Sauce post.

Tips for Crispy Air Fryer Buffalo Wings

  • Pat the wings dry: Dry skin crisps, wet skin steams. This step matters more than anything else.
  • Cook in a single layer: Air fryers need airflow. Overcrowding leads to pale, soft wings.
  • Finish hot: That last blast at 400°F is what gives you crisp edges and golden skin.
  • Sauce at the end: Toss wings in buffalo sauce right before serving so they stay crisp as long as possible.

Serving Suggestions

Air fryer buffalo wings are perfect for game day spreads, casual get-togethers, or an easy wing night at home. Here are my favorite ways to serve them:

  • Classic buffalo platter: Pile the wings onto a serving tray with celery and carrot sticks, plus ranch dressing or blue cheese for dipping. Serve extra warm buffalo sauce on the side for sauce lovers.
  • Pizza night: Serve these buffalo wings alongside your favorite pizza for an easy dinner and guaranteed family favorite. Add a crisp house salad or classic Caesar salad to balance the heat and keep the meal from feeling too heavy. If you’re serving a group, put the wings out first while the pizza finishes, then toss everything on the table family-style.
  • Make it a meal: Serve the wings with crispy air fryer French fries, coleslaw, and your favorite dips and sauces.

Serving tip: If you’re feeding a group, keep the wings unsauced until the last minute and let everyone add sauce to taste.

Air Fryer Buffalo Chicken Wings FAQ

How long do buffalo wings take in the air fryer?

Most wings take about 18 to 22 minutes at 370°F, flipping halfway through, depending on size and air fryer model.

Can I use drumsticks instead of chicken wings?

Yes. Drumsticks work great in the air fryer, but they take longer than wings. Preheat to 370°F and cook for 25 to 30 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the skin is crisp and the internal temperature reaches at least 170°F.

How do I know when my wings are done cooking?

The most reliable way is to use a digital meat thermometer and check the thickest part of the wing (avoid touching the bone). Wings are done when they reach at least 170°F, and the skin should look golden and crisp.

Can I make these buffalo wings in the oven?

Yes. If you prefer oven-baked wings, try my baked buffalo wings recipe where I walk your through exactly how to make them in the oven.

Storage, Reheating, and Freezing

Buffalo wings are crispiest right after tossing, but leftovers still reheat well.

  • To store: Refrigerate wings in an airtight container for up to 3 days. If possible, store extra sauce separately.
  • To reheat: Air fry at 375°F for 3 to 5 minutes until hot and crisp, then toss with warmed buffalo sauce.
  • To freeze: Freeze cooked wings without sauce for the best texture. Reheat from frozen in the air fryer until hot and crisp, then toss in warmed sauce.

Ingredients

For the Air Fryer Wings

For the Buffalo Sauce (or use store-bought)

Instructions

  • Preheat the air fryer to 370°F. Lightly spray the basket of a 3-quart (or larger) air fryer with nonstick cooking spray.
  • Pat the wings very dry with paper towels, then season with garlic powder, salt, and black pepper until evenly coated.
  • Place the wings in the basket in a single layer so they do not touch (cook in batches if needed). Cook for 10 minutes, then flip. Continue to cook for an additional 8 minutes, then flip again.
  • Increase the air fryer temperature to 400°F and cook skin-side up for 3 to 4 minutes, or until the skin looks golden and crispy.
  • While the wings cook, melt the butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Whisk in the hot sauce, vinegar, and garlic powder and warm just until smooth.
  • Transfer the hot wings to a large bowl. Pour about 3/4 of the sauce over the wings and toss to coat. Serve immediately with the remaining sauce on the side for dipping.

Notes

Doneness: Wings are best when the internal temperature reaches at least 170°F (juicier meat and crispier skin).
Sauce timing: For the crispiest wings, toss with buffalo sauce right before serving. The longer wings sit in sauce, the softer the skin becomes.
Store-bought shortcut: You can absolutely use your favorite store-bought buffalo wing sauce instead of homemade.
Reheating: Reheat in an air fryer at 375°F for 2 to 4 minutes, or in a 400°F oven for about 5 minutes, until hot and crisp.
Frozen wings: Air frying from frozen works, but they release more moisture and will be a little less crispy. For best results, thaw and pat dry first. If cooking from frozen, start at 400°F for 6 minutes to thaw, break apart, season, then continue cooking as directed.
