Feta cheese is bold, salty, and delightfully tangy. But, if there’s one thing feta cheese is not, it’s spreadable. Fortunately, this creamy whipped feta dip is here to save the day! This simple whipped feta recipe blends block feta cheese, Greek yogurt, olive oil, garlic, and lemon juice into a creamy, tangy, spreadable dip that is ready in 5 minutes. Enjoy it with homemade pita bread, added to these 20-minute gyro wraps, or swirled into your next bowl of spicy penne arrabbiata.

What is Whipped Feta?

Whipped feta is a creamy dip or spread made by blending feta cheese with ingredients like Greek yogurt, olive oil, cream cheese, or sour cream until smooth and spreadable. This version uses Greek yogurt instead of cream cheese, which keeps the dip tangy, light, and creamy without making it too rich.

It is different from tirokafteri, a spicy Greek feta dip made with roasted peppers or chili peppers.

Ingredients for Whipped Feta Dip

A top-down view of all the ingredients needed to make whipped feta dip. In the center, a block of feta cheese sits on a plate. Surrounding it are small bowls of black pepper, salt, Greek yogurt, olive oil, and a single garlic clove. There is also a halved lemon on the right. The ingredients are clearly labeled and arranged on a white marble countertop.
  • Feta cheese: Use a block of Greek feta packed in brine for the creamiest texture.
  • Greek yogurt: Full-fat Greek yogurt makes the dip creamy and tangy. Low-fat Greek yogurt also works.
  • Olive oil: Helps loosen the feta and gives the dip a smooth finish.
  • Garlic: Optional, but adds savory flavor.
  • Lemon juice: Adds brightness. Start small so the dip does not become too thin.
  • Salt and pepper: Taste before adding salt since feta is already salty.
  • Toppings: Pomegranate, za’atar, mint, honey, chili oil, olives, nuts, or roasted tomatoes.

Best Feta for Whipped Feta

The secret to making the creamiest whipped feta is starting with a good-quality block of feta cheese packed in brine. Pre-crumbled feta may be convenient, but it is often coated with anti-caking agents that keep it from blending as smoothly. It also tends to be drier, which can make the dip grainy instead of creamy.

For the best flavor, look for Greek feta made with sheep’s milk, or a blend of sheep’s milk and goat’s milk. I love the Dodoni brand, but any good-quality block feta in brine will work well. Before blending, drain the feta and pat it dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture. This helps the dip whip up thick, creamy, and smooth.

How to Make Whipped Feta Dip

Here’s how to make this whipped feta dip with step-by-step images. Check out the recipe card below for the complete ingredient list and printable instructions. The key is to blend long enough for the feta to break down, then adjust the texture slowly with olive oil, lemon juice, or Greek yogurt only as needed.

Using a personal blender, such as a Bullet-style blender? Since these small blenders use a sealed blending cup, add the olive oil with the Greek yogurt, garlic, and lemon juice from the start. Blend until smooth and creamy, stopping to scrape down the sides as needed.

  1. Blend the mixture on high speed; with the food processor running, slowly drizzle olive oil through the feed tube (the top opening) until it is smooth and creamy, about 1-2 minutes. Pause to scrape down the sides as needed.

Tips for the Creamiest Whipped Feta

  • Use block feta in brine: For the smoothest, creamiest whipped feta, start with a block of feta packed in brine. Pre-crumbled feta is usually drier and often contains anti-caking agents, which can make the dip harder to blend smoothly.
  • Bring the feta and yogurt to room temperature: Room temperature ingredients blend more easily and create a smoother, creamier dip. Cold feta and cold Greek yogurt can be harder to process and may leave the dip thicker or slightly lumpy.
  • Drain and pat the feta dry: Before blending, drain the feta and pat it dry with a paper towel. This removes excess brine and helps prevent the dip from becoming too loose or watery.
  • Add salt last: Feta is naturally salty, so always taste the dip before adding more salt. Most of the time, it only needs a little black pepper and the toppings for extra flavor.
  • Adjust the texture slowly: If the dip is too thick, add a small amount of olive oil, lemon juice, or Greek yogurt. Start with 1 to 2 teaspoons of olive oil or lemon juice, or 1 tablespoon of Greek yogurt, then blend again. Add more only as needed so the dip stays thick, creamy, and spreadable.

Troubleshooting Whipped Feta

Why is my whipped feta runny?

Whipped feta can turn runny if the feta is too wet, the Greek yogurt is watery, too much lemon juice or olive oil was added, or the liquids were added too quickly. To fix it, blend in a little more feta, add a spoonful of thick Greek yogurt, or chill the dip for 30 minutes to help it firm up.

Why is my whipped feta grainy?

Feta is naturally crumbly, so whipped feta may have a little texture. Pre-crumbled feta can make it even grainier since it is usually drier and often coated with anti-caking agents. For the smoothest dip, use block feta in brine and blend for 1 to 2 minutes, stopping to scrape down the sides as needed.

Why is my whipped feta too thick?

If the dip is too thick, add 1 to 2 teaspoons of olive oil or lemon juice, or 1 tablespoon of Greek yogurt at a time. Blend after each addition until the dip is smooth, creamy, and easy to spread.

Why is my whipped feta too salty?

Feta is a salty cheese, so the dip may taste too salty if extra salt is added too early or if the feta itself is very briny. Serve it with unsalted vegetables, warm pita, roasted potatoes, eggs, or grain bowls to balance the flavor. Next time, skip the added salt and use a milder feta block.

Whipped Feta Topping Ideas

This creamy whipped feta is the perfect base for all kinds of sweet, savory, spicy, and crunchy toppings. For this recipe, I topped mine with olive oil, homemade za’atar seasoning blend, pomegranate pearls, and fresh mint to create the perfect Middle Eastern-inspired dip. Here are a few more delicious ideas:

  • Sweet and tangy: Drizzle with honey and top with pomegranate arils and chopped toasted pecans. A beautiful combo perfect for the holidays.
  • Mediterranean-inspired: Drizzle with olive oil, chopped marinated olives, roasted cherry tomatoes, and sprinkle with crushed oregano or lemon zest. Delicious with flatbread, crudités, or as a mezze platter.
  • Bold and spicy: Drizzle with hot chili oil or hot honey, then sprinkle with Aleppo pepper or crushed red pepper flakes and thinly sliced green onions.
  • Earthy and sweet: Top with roasted grapes, crumbled walnuts, and a light drizzle of balsamic glaze.
  • Fresh and crunchy: Add diced cucumber, cherry tomatoes, fresh herbs, pistachios, or toasted pine nuts.

For the prettiest presentation, spoon the whipped feta into a shallow bowl while it is still at room temperature. Use the back of a spoon to spread it into a wide circle, creating little ridges and valleys for the olive oil, honey, herbs, nuts, or other toppings to settle into.

What to Serve with Whipped Feta Dip

You can serve whipped feta as part of a mezze (appetizer) platter or snack plate with warm pita bread, pita chips, crackers, crostini, or fresh vegetables. It is also delicious as a spread, sauce, or creamy base for grilled meats, roasted vegetables, and Mediterranean-inspired bowls.

Here are a few favorite ways to serve it:

Make Ahead and Storage Tips

Whipped feta dip can be made 1-2 days ahead and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Leftovers will keep for up to 3-4 days. For the best texture, wait to add toppings until just before serving. The dip will firm up after chilling, so let it sit at room temperature for 15-20 minutes before serving, then stir well or re-blend if needed. Freezing is not recommended.

    Hi –
Quick question – how would you adapt this to use a personal blender (like a bullet) with no “drizzle port”?

    Thanks!

    1. Jessica Randhawa says:

Great question! If youโ€™re using a personal blender without a drizzle port, you can still make this whipped feta dip with a simple adjustment. Instead of drizzling the olive oil in while blending, just add the olive oil along with the Greek yogurt, garlic, and lemon juice right from the start. Then blend everything together until smooth and creamy, pausing to scrape down the sides as needed. The texture will still be deliciously creamy, and youโ€™ll hardly notice a difference!
