This Apple Cinnamon Overnight Oats Recipe is the ultimate comfy morning breakfast. Creamy overnight oats, topped with homemade applesauce and warm fried apples, will leave you feeling like you’re eating a slice of apple pie.

There are so many things to love about these apple cinnamon overnight oats. They are easy to meal prep for those busy mornings when you need something quick, they are the perfect amount of sweetness, and they bring together all your favorite fall flavors in just one bowl. 

Filled with Vanilla Overnight Oats, Applesauce, and Fried Apples, these awesome overnight oats can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or dessert! They take less than 5 minutes to prepare and will be ready to enjoy the following day or later in the afternoon.

What type of oats do I use for overnight oats?

Old-fashioned rolled oats will yield the best results. Avoid using instant oats; they will become too soggy and end up more closely resembling porridge than overnight oats. On the other hand, steel-cut oats will soak up less liquid ingredients and become chewy.

How to Make Apple Cinnamon Overnight Oats

To achieve that creamy texture, start your oat base at least 4 hours before serving them. To store them, you can use a mason jar or any container you have on hand.

Start by adding all the ingredients to your container of choice, mix to combine thoroughly, cover, and place in the refrigerator for a minimum of four hours or overnight.

At the same time, prepare your homemade applesauce. You can use store-bought applesauce if you prefer or if you are short on time. Then, place it in an airtight container and store it in the fridge to enjoy all week.

Lastly, prepare your fried apples. If time allows, cook them in the morning; so they are fresh and warm.

Optional Additions

There are many ways to customize this recipe. For example, you can opt for plant-based milk like oat milk or almond milk instead of dairy milk. Add a scoop of protein powder if you want a little more protein. For added sweetness, top off your oats with a drizzle of honey. You can even add dried fruit like cranberries if you like.

These apple cinnamon oats are one of my favorite make-ahead breakfasts to enjoy during the autumn and winter months. It’s a simple meal prep breakfast you can enjoy all week long. 

How to Serve

When you’re ready to enjoy, just pull them out of the fridge, top them with applesauce and warm fried apples, and enjoy.

Ingredients
 
 

For the overnight oats

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup plain or vanilla yogurt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoon chia seeds
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

For the homemade applesauce

  • 3 lbs apples - peeled, cored, quartered and chopped into smaller chunks
  • ½ cup water
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

For the cinnamon fried apples

  • ¾ cup salted butter
  • 8 medium tart red apples - unpeeled or peeled, cored, and chopped into small cubes
  • ½ large lemon - juiced
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

Toppings (optional)

  • Sliced almonds or walnuts
  • Additional chia seeds and oats
  • Honey

Instructions
 

For the overnight oats

  • In a large mason jar or container with a secure lid, combine the oats, yogurt, milk, chia seeds, and vanilla extract. Mix well. Cover with an airtight lid and store in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours to overnight.

For the homemade applesauce

  • Place the peeled, cored, quartered and chopped apples in a large pot. Add the water, sugar, ground cinnamon and salt and stir. Bring to a boil on high heat, then turn to low and cover. Maintain a low simmer for 30 minutes or until the apples are completely soft and cooked through.
  • Once fully cooked, remove from heat. For a chunky applesauce, mash the apples in the pot with a potato masher. For a smooth applesauce, add to a food processor or blender and blend until smooth (if using a blender, work in batches and allow time to cool).

For the cinnamon fried apples

  • Melt butter in a large cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the butter until melted. Add the apples, lemon juice, and brown sugar. Stir well to combine.
  • Continue to cook the apples until they are soft, but not mushy (you want some bite left). Remove from heat and stir in the ground cinnamon.

Assemble

  • Add the desired amount of overnight oats to a bowl followed by homemade applesauce and warm, fried apples. Top each bowl with sliced almonds, chia seeds, and oats, if desired. Enjoy!
