These Air Fryer French Fries are crisp on the outside, tender on the inside, and seasoned to absolute perfection! Just as flavorful and delicious as regular french fries but so much healthier and easier to make.

Perfect Fries in the Air Fryer

Making deep-fried French fries at home is a no-go for me. Dealing with messy splattering hot oil is where I draw the line in the kitchen. Fortunately for us, we can all make perfectly crisp and delicious “fried” potatoes at home without hot oil splattering all over our forearms.

Healthier, but without the side effect of tasting boring, the secret to making these awesome, crispy, and totally delicious French fries is the air fryer.

What is an Air Fryer?

A magic machine that sits right on your kitchen countertop, the air fryer may be small but it’s mighty. Come summertime when it’s blazing hot outside and you refuse to turn on the oven, it’s a true life-saver. In other words, it’s a mini super-powered convection oven that cooks food by circulating hot air in a confined space.

These air fryer French fries are perfect with all your favorite burgers and sliders, with chicken nuggets or chicken tenders, and dipped into bubbling hot Velveeta cheese dip (because why not?).

How to Make French Fries in the Air Fryer?

  1. Scrub the potatoes and dry thoroughly. Cut the potatoes into ¼-inch sticks and transfer them to a bowl. Cover the potatoes with hot water and allow them to rest for 10 minutes.
  2. Preheat your air fryer to 380 degrees F and spray the inside of the air fryer basket with non-stick cooking spray.
  3. Drain the potatoes and dry completely. Transfer to a large bowl and coat with EVOO, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.
  4. Transfer the potatoes to your air fryer basket and arrange them in a single layer so that none of the fries are overlapping or touching. You will need to cook your potatoes in batches.
  5. Cook for 6 minutes, carefully slide out the air fryer basket and flip the fries over. Continue to cook for an additional 6-8 minutes, or until fries are cooked to your desired doneness.
  6. Remove the fries to a clean plate and garnish with fresh parsley or grated parmesan cheese, if desired. Season with additional salt and pepper, to taste. Repeat with any remaining potatoes.

Tips for the Crispiest Air Fryer French Fries

  • Soak your potatoes (after they’ve been cut into matchsticks) in a bowl of cold water. Soaking in cold water helps to remove excess starch from the potatoes.
  • Cook them in a single layer so that there are no overlapping or touching potatoes.
  • If you plan to serve all of the fries at the same time, place them all back in the air fryer (don’t worry about overlapping or touching) and cook for 2-3 minutes. This will reheat and recrisp any of the potatoes from the previous batches.
  • Enjoy immediately.

How to Reheat French Fries in the Air Fryer?

To reheat french fries in your air fryer, preheat it first to 380 degrees F. Spray the inside basket with non-stick cooking spray. Add the french fries in a single layer. Cook for 2-3 minutes, or until desired doneness and crispness is reached.

What to Serve with Air Fryer French Fries?

Serve these delicious crunchy crispy fries with all of your favorite dipping sauces like ranch dressing, honey mustard sauce, Sriracha ranch, or ketchup.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound russet potatoes - sliced into 1/4-inch sticks
  • 2 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • Optional garnishes - fresh parsley, grated parmesan cheese, or chopped chives

Instructions

  • Scrub the potatoes under cool running water and dry them completely. To cut potatoes or french fries, first cut them in half lengthwise. Place the two halves cut-side down onto the cutting board and cut each half lengthwise into ¼-inch thick strips. Turn the strips on their side and slice each into ¼-inch sticks.
  • Transfer your fries to a large bowl and cover them with cold water. Allow the fries to sit for 10 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, preheat the air fryer to 380°F and spray the inside of your air fryer basket with nonstick cooking spray.
  • After the potatoes have been soaked for 10 minutes, drain and dry the potatoes completely with paper towels. Transfer to a large bowl and drizzle with enough extra virgin olive oil to just coat the potatoes, about 2 teaspoons. Sprinkle with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Toss to coat, making sure the spices are evenly distributed over the fries.
  • Transfer the potatoes to the basket of your air fryer. For the crispiest air fryer French fries, place the potatoes in a single layer so that none of the potatoes are overlapping or touching. For super-crispy air fryer french fries, place them in a "crowded" single layer where some of the fries may be touching or overlapping. Regardless, you will need to cook your fries in at least 2 batches.
  • Cook for 6 minutes, carefully slide out the air fryer basket and flip the fries over. Continue to cook for an additional 6-8 minutes, or until fries are cooked to your desired doneness.
  • Remove the fries to a clean plate and season with additional salt and black pepper, if needed. Repeat with any remaining potatoes.

Jessica’s Notes

  • I love my Cosori Air Fryer.
  • Remember that total cooking time varies based on the air fryer being used to cook the potatoes and how thin (or thick) the potatoes were sliced.
  • You may use russet potatoes or Yukon gold potatoes. Russet potatoes will have fluffier insides whereas Yukon gold potatoes will have creamier insides.
  • Storage: Transfer leftover fries to an airtight container and keep them stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheating: You can easily reheat your fries in the air fryer preheated to 380 degrees F for 2-3 minutes, or until hot and crispy.
