Homemade Honey Mustard Sauce

Honey mustard sauce is one of my absolute favorite things to make homemade. Perfect for dunking, dipping, or smearing all over just about anything, it’s super easy to make with ingredients you probably already have in your pantry.

Versatile, and easily customizable, it’s easy to make this creamy dipping sauce sweeter, creamier, or taste more like mustard. You can even use it as a marinade for baked chicken thighs or chicken breasts.

What is Honey Mustard Made Of?

To make this homemade honey mustard recipe, you’ll need,

  • Mayonnaise
  • Dijon mustard
  • Yellow mustard
  • Honey
  • White vinegar
  • Salt + Pepper
  • Paprika (optional)

How to Make Honey Mustard

First, combine the mustard with the vinegar in a bowl. Next, add and combine the honey with the mustard and vinegar combination. Finally, stir in the mayonnaise and season with salt and black pepper, to taste.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is honey mustard gluten-free?

In many, or most, cases, yes. This honey mustard recipe is gluten-free, assuming that the mayonnaise and mustard that are used to make the recipe are certified gluten-free.

What is the best mustard for honey mustard?

With this recipe, I added mostly dijon mustard and a little bit of yellow mustard. I do not recommend that you use only yellow mustard. If you plan to use just one type of mustard, stick with brown mustard, like dijon.

How long does homemade honey mustard last?

Stored in an airtight container and in the refrigerator, it will last for approximately 2 weeks (or longer!) Just be sure to date your jar or container so that you know when it was made.

Can honey mustard be frozen?

I do not recommend freezing honey mustard sauce as it is made with a base of mayonnaise which separates after thawing from frozen.

How to Serve

Dunking, dipping, marinating, and smearing, the ways to enjoy this creamy sweet homemade honey mustard sauce are endless. Serve with,

  • Air fryer chicken tenders
  • Chicken nuggets
  • Popcorn chicken
  • French fries
  • Sweet potato fries
  • Roasted potatoes
  • Soft pretzels
  • Sausage
  • Pork chops
  • Chicken sandwiches
  • Chicken salad

I’ll also use it as a marinade and cook chicken directly in the sauce. Like I did in this Instant Pot honey mustard chicken thigh recipe or this easy-baked honey mustard chicken recipe.

It also makes a really fantastic salad dressing. You may choose to keep the mayonnaise or swap it out for plain yogurt instead. It’s great for drizzling over roasted veggies, especially crispy roasted Brussels sprouts and tender roasted asparagus.
